Ministry of Food – How May We Serve You?
It starts with education on how to be the best stewards of our bodies and the nutritious food nature provides.
It progresses to food recovery with the end of starvation and expands to a holistic network of services for a life well lived.
Why Ministry of Food?
Sad to say we are now faced with another war on our hands, the war on poor nutrition and health. The reality is, we’re in the middle of the worst food related pandemic this country has ever seen. Yes, it’s partly from a lack of food in certain areas, relieved by food recovery, and primarily the consumption of far too much of the wrong food. Would you believe Americans recently spent more money on fast food than education? Not expensive French cheese and cuts of pork loin but French fries, pizzas, burgers and other rubbish.
School lunches have been neglected for many years, cooking lessons have all but stopped, physical education has been reduced and more people than ever are driving to an office or working from home. All of these are major reason why the US is the most obese country in the world with the most food related health problems.
Until recently, it’s been estimated only 1 in 3 Americans cook their dinners from scratch. Even though 3 in 4 eat most of their meals at home, over half are fast food, delivery or takeout. Now, more than ever, everyone needs to know how to cook simple, nutritious, and affordable meals.
The question is, do we continue to mind our own business or do something about it?
How: Our Philosophy
The care of our bodies and the natural food provided has been a subject close to our hearts for many years now. Eating is one of the best pleasures of life. Ideally, healthy, delicious food would be everywhere; easy to choose and enjoy. In reality, thousands of barriers keep us from nourishing our bodies and satisfying our taste buds. Money shouldn’t be one of those barriers.
Cooking ability, not money, is the secret to tasty meals. Everyone can eat healthy food on a budget as long as they know how to cook; and pass it on. Greater Grace food pantry introduces a new world of delicious meals available on even the smallest budgets. Budget meals aren’t easy, and hard weeks turn meals into chores. Make those chores a thing of the past.
Healthy eating is simple: Eat fruit and vegetables. Many people focus on meat as the main part of their meal. We emphasize more fruit and vegetables to reduce both cost and waste. Our intent is to explore satisfying meals without the cheap carbohydrates to fill your stomach and restaurant profit margins.
We offer affordable suggestions you can change as your budget allows. For example, sweet cream butter is not cheap. However, it creates far more crunch, flavor and richness than comparable oils.
We’re not nutritionists, simply home cooks like you. If you have certain dietary restrictions, then some suggestions may not work for you. That’s alright, you can change them to suit your needs or scroll down for more inspiration.
More than mere recipes, we offer systems to discover your favorite meals that fit your budget and nutrition requirements. The soul of great cooking is improvisation, so adapt our advice to suit your taste. If something doesn’t work out, we hope you’ll forgive yourself and learn from the experience; while eating all the delicious evidence.
The information on our food pantry site helps you plan your meals. However, it is not a meal plan; they are far too individualized. Since every person has different needs and tastes, no one source would be adequate. Instead, we offer a strategy of simple, yet flexible, suggestions.
We believe learning to cook has a liberating effect that builds self-esteem. As you become a better cook, you’ll be able to conjure deliciousness wherever you want, whenever you want. Good cooking alone won’t end hunger, but it will make life better and it’s worth the effort.
Like a good meal, good recipes are best shared with others. What’s on the menu? Read on to find out and discover how easy it can be to feed your neighbor.
What Can Help?
Simply pledge to learn the basics and a handful of healthy recipes. Master this in your own home first, then pass it on by teaching at least two, preferably four, of your neighbors to do the same. Make it fun with a cooking party and invite everyone who pledges to pass it on.
Why Pass It On?
How will this fun cooking party change the lives of thousands? Let’s say you pass it on to only 2 neighbors who each pass it on to 2 others…this would take less than 7 times to pack Yankee Stadium and only 13 times to have everyone in the United States cooking. Just imagine all the fun teaching and learning; not to mention all the other social and health benefits!
Seems too good to be true? See for yourself how many you could help by only teaching two:
That’s right, it would only take 33 repetitions for everyone in the world to learn how to cook simple, healthy, meals!
When you think about it, this is simply a modern version of passing recipes down through the generations and a fun way to be part of something life-changing for the entire world. Sharing something so basic with so many benefits can cause a profound and inspirational change in people. It’s fantastic to see and can literally happen over-night; even to people with no money, no time and no interest.
We want to serve you well whether you’re a beginner, pro, or simply want to love your neighbors. We also want to empower you to make easy, affordable, home-cooked meals from scratch.
